Wire size calculator
Tell it what you're feeding. You get the wire and breaker size, and the reasons behind it.
How this is calculated
- Continuous loads are multiplied by 125% before sizing the wire and breaker (210.19(A)(1), 210.20(A)).
- The wire must carry the design load at the terminal temperature (110.14(C)) and carry the actual load after temperature correction and bundling adjustment from its insulation rating (310.15). The smaller of the two is what you can use.
- The breaker is the next standard size up from the design load (240.6(A)). It must protect the wire, with the next-size-up allowance in 240.4(B) and the small-conductor limits in 240.4(D): 14 AWG Cu 15 A, 12 AWG Cu 20 A, 10 AWG Cu 30 A.
- Doesn't cover rooftop adders, cables in thermal insulation, or the special tables for dwelling services (310.12). Motors, A/C and welders use their own articles; use the motor calculator for motors.
