Voltage drop calculator
Long runs lose voltage, and equipment at the end can run hot or fail to start. Enter the run and see how much you lose.
How this is calculated
- Single-phase: VD = 2 × I × R × L ÷ 1000. Three-phase: VD = 1.732 × I × R × L ÷ 1000.
- R is the uncoated, stranded DC resistance at 75°C from Chapter 9, Table 8, divided by the number of parallel sets.
- Reactance is ignored. For large feeders at low power factor, use Chapter 9, Table 9 effective impedance.
- This sizes for voltage drop only. Use the wire size calculator to make sure the wire can carry the current.
